Nothing but Surface
I have continued to create by focusing on form and color—on appearance alone.
My practice originates in painting: the smallest units of its composition—point, line, and plane—and the act of seeing itself.

For a long time, I assumed that contemporary art required either a connection to society or motivations rooted deep within the self. When I first encountered art, I could simply say, “I made it because it’s interesting!”
But then I began to question: Isn’t that too shallow? Shouldn’t I dig deeper into meaning?
In a world where articulating concepts is taken for granted, I came to believe that my work would not be accepted unless I excavated my inner self. As I dug deeper and deeper, I arrived at the theme of “neutrality.”

But I was wrong.
My “neutrality” did not align with its common understanding, and I found myself unable to explain it clearly to others. So I reexamined everything.
One day, a friend asked me, “How would you describe your work without using the word ‘neutral’?”
I murmured, almost unconsciously: “ツ and シ look alike. That’s interesting. That’s all it is.”
That was the answer.
My “neutrality” did not align with its common understanding, and I found myself unable to explain it clearly to others. So I reexamined everything.
One day, a friend asked me, “How would you describe your work without using the word ‘neutral’?”
I murmured, almost unconsciously: “ツ and シ look alike. That’s interesting. That’s all it is.”
That was the answer.
Somewhere along the way, saying “because it’s interesting” had begun to require an immense amount of courage.
“It’s interesting.” That is all.
Must visual art be anything more than the enjoyment of appearance alone?

私は形と色、その見た目〈だけ〉に焦点をあて制作を続けてきた。
私の制作の基点は絵画にある。絵画の構成要素における最小単位〈点・線・面〉、
そして見るという機能。
ずっと現代アートは社会への接続、または個人の奥深くに触れた動機が必要なのだろうと
思い込んでいた。 アートと出会ってすぐの頃は、簡単に「面白いから作った！」と言えた。
しかし、ー これだけでは作品が浅いのではないか。もっと意味を掘り下げるべきだ。ー
言葉を紡ぐことが当たり前の世界の中で自分の作品は通用しないのだと、自己を掘り下げることが当然だと思うようになった。そうやって掘って掘って掘り下げたら、「中立」というテーマを
見つけた。
しかし、それは間違いだった。
私の中立は一般的な中立を示してはいなかったから、具体的に上手く他者へに説明できなかった。
だから再び情報を洗い直した。
「自分の作品を、『中立』を使わずに説明するならどう表現する？」ある日友人に聞かれたとき、
「ツとシって似てる。面白い。やはりそれしかない」と、小さくこぼれた。
これが答えだった。
私はいつの間にか、「面白いからです」というたった一言に、とてつもない勇気が必要になっていた。
「面白い。」ただそれだけである。
ビジュアル・アートは、見た目〈だけ〉を楽しむのではいけないのか。
